With a tagline that beams “Smile…pass it on!” and a name that means “fun” in Thai, Sanuk drops major hints on its philosophy for finding happiness — and founder Jeff Kelley's thought process is no different. Born and bred in the sunny, surf town of Huntington Beach, he infuses optimism and innovation into everything he makes. In fact, his first sandal was created out of green indoor-outdoor carpet and since then, the line has grown to include the beloved sidewalk surfers and yoga-sling sandals of grom and yogi fame.
Once reserved for the sandy enclaves and escapist getaways of remote islands and coastal getaways, the Sanuk sandal would have you know that as long as “the ground ain’t froze, then free those toes.” Why limit bare feet to the beaches (especially with the kind of comfort, durability and style that it can offer)?
We were more than happy to hop on board when Sanuk approached us about bringing out some of that summertime joy into everyday urban living. One of the main challenges was teaching urbanites how to loosen up and dress down, while keeping the look from becoming too casual. We had expert bloggers from various cities and lifestyles each share at least 5 tips for fashionably paring things down without compromising their unique urban styles — whether it meant incorporating a sleek clutch instead of heels to “dress things up,” or mixing in a favorite band tee and some eclectic jewelry to show off a bit of heir own interests and personality.
Linh’s Tips for Urban Hiking
1. Wear comfortable sandals. Your tootsies will thank you at the end of the day.
2. Denim shorts will keep you cool during the warmer temps.
3. Throw in a bit of your personality — I used a vintage band tee from one of my new favorite brands.
4. Add in an optional piece for elevated styling, like this staple denim jacket.
5. Bring a chic bag to lug around your key essentials.
Kiara’s Tips for Party Hopping
1. White dresses are incredibly versatile and on-trend for summer. I belted mine for some extra shape and styling.
2. Neutral pieces like khakis and nudes are coming in as well. I chose a light trench style coat from Aritzia to pair over my dress.
3. Sanuk sandals with a subtle print pattern add a slightly feminine and dressy touch for events (while understated enough for casual summer gatherings).
4. Dress up basics with unique jewelry and boho finds.
5. Now’s the time to get a cute pedicure for showing off those exposed toes!
Toshiko's Tips for Beach Lounging
1. The first step to a classy-casual look is starting off simple. I tucked a crisp white tunic shirt into black skinny jeans for a classic black and white look.
2. Keep everything minimal. I paired this ensemble with a simple, yet elegant tote bag.
3. Don’t be afraid to play around with resort basics. This sweet, fun pink colored Panama hat helps show off my feminine side.
4. Strappy Sanuk sandals in a classic, solid color completes the outfit.
5. Don’t forget those Audrey-inspired shades!
